ChatGPT: the Swiss Army knife

Best for: people who want one app that does a bit of everything well.

ChatGPT's strength is breadth. It's good at conversation, it has the leading image model (OpenAI's GPT Image holds the top three spots on the text-to-image leaderboard), it handles voice well, and it has the biggest library of integrations. The new GPT-6 Sol is a real upgrade for everyday work.

Weak spot: it's no longer the clear leader for coding or careful long-form writing.

Claude: the deep thinker

Best for: writers, analysts, developers, and anyone working with long documents.

Claude models hold #1 and #2 in our Power Rankings this week, and Opus 5.5 is our top coding model. People who use Claude tend to praise its writing voice and how well it follows detailed instructions.

Weak spot: a smaller ecosystem of extras (image generation, plugins) than ChatGPT.

Gemini: the one already in your pocket

Best for: Google Workspace users, Android users, and budget-conscious people.

Gemini 3.8 Flash is the surprise of the season. It's a "fast" model sitting in the LMArena top 10. Gemini's biggest advantage is integration: it can work directly inside Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android. Google also has Veo, one of the best video generators.

Do you need to pay at all?

Maybe not. All three offer free tiers, and the free models in 2026 are better than the paid ones were two years ago. Pay if you:

• hit usage limits regularly,
• need the top model for work that earns you money, or
• need features like long file uploads, video generation or agents.

The verdict

There's no single winner in 2026. Claude leads on quality of thinking, ChatGPT on breadth, and Gemini on integration and value. Pick the one that fits the way you work, and check back weekly, because this race changes fast.
